ELMHURST, IL – Sidewalks are a given in most of Elmhurst, but not in the city's northeast corner.
The city is working to change that reality.
At Monday's City Council meeting, aldermen will vote on a $57,147 engineering contract with BLA Inc.
The work is for a sidewalk on the east side of Indiana Street, from Crestview to Wrightwood avenues. Indiana leads to two schools, Churchville Middle and Conrad Fischer Elementary.
Construction is expected this summer, according to a city memo.
A few months ago, the city completed a sidewalk on the north side of Crestview.
In a Facebook video this week, Ward 3 Alderman Michael Bram, who represents the northeast side, said it was possible that a sidewalk for Van Auken Street may be done this year, in addition to Indiana.
In January 2025, Elmhurst aldermen approved a 40-year plan to get sidewalks on every street, stepping away from a past policy that seemed to have little effect.
The overwhelming majority of streets south of North Avenue have sidewalks. But the city's northeast corner is almost entirely without them. The same goes for parts of northwest Elmhurst.
