ELMHURST, IL – A Bensenville man was arrested Friday in a fatal head-on crash on Route 83, just north of Elmhurst's city limit, authorities said.
His blood-alcohol level was reported at three times the legal limit.
Zion Turrubiates-Andrade, 22, of Bensenville, was charged with one count of aggravated DUI causing death and two counts of aggravated DUI, police said.
The charges stem from a crash that occurred about 5 a.m. Friday between Frontage Road and Interstate 290 on Route 83, police said.
Authorities said Turrubiates-Andrade was driving north in a 2002 Buick LeSabre in Route 83's southbound lanes when he struck a car with two occupants.
Both occupants were taken to a local hospital for treatment. Two days later, one of them, Michele Lavorata, died from injuries suffered in the crash, police said.
"With the convenience of ride-sharing services available with just a few taps on his phone, there is absolutely no reason whatsoever Mr. Turrubiates-Andrade should have gotten behind the wheel of a car after he had allegedly been drinking," DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin said in a news release. “Drunk driving crashes, particularly those involving a fatality, are particularly egregious as they are 100 percent avoidable.”
A DuPage County judge ordered Turrubiates-Andrade to stay in jail until his trial.
