Elmhurst Continues Building Sidewalks Where Few Exist

ELMHURST, IL – Another street on Elmhurst's northeast side should be seeing a sidewalk for the first time by year's end.

Last month, the city accepted nine bids to build a nearly half-mile-long sidewalk on Van Auken Street, from Crestview to North End avenues.

Over the last year, the city has also installed sidewalks on the east side of Indiana Street and the north side of Crestview Avenue. They are both in the same area, in northeast Ward 3.

In early 2025, the City Council launched a long-term plan to fill in gaps in Elmhurst's sidewalk network. Aldermen expressed frustration with a longtime policy that appeared to have done little to help neighborhoods without sidewalks.

The Van Auken sidewalk will be on the west side of the street.

Chicago's Nardulli Construction was the low bidder for the project, at $584,000. Other bids were for nearly $1 million.

The work is expected to start in October and end in December. Nardulli also handled the Indiana and Crestview projects.

Ward 3 Alderman Michael Bram told Patch on Friday that the sidewalk on the west side of nearby North York Street was nearly done.

Bram has taken videos of himself walking on the new sidewalks in his ward. His ward has the fewest sidewalks.
