ELMHURST, IL – It rained a lot over the summer. Two Elmhurst school construction contractors learned the hard way.
They both made the same mistake during roofing projects at York High and Churchville Middle schools, an official said.
In both cases, the contractors left roof drains open during repairs, according to Elmhurst School District 205. Storms later occurred.
As a result, water damaged a gym floor at York and ceiling tiles at Churchville, the district said. The contractors paid for the repairs because they made the mistake, the school board's finance committee was told this week.
The drains were left open between a drying process and a plumber capping the drains, said Leo Cassidy, the district's operations director.
Board members were puzzled.
"No one checked the weather report?" board President Athena Arvanitis asked.
