The group said the father of four is battling severe dementia. His wife has stepped away from work to care for him full time and support their children, who range from 9 months to high school age.

"The Poker Bike Run is about a lot more than getting together for a great day with friends and fellow riders," Rocco Revello, the bike run's chair, said. "When we learned what this family was going through, we knew we wanted this year's event to make a meaningful difference."

The family also issued a statement.

"The $10,000 will provide meaningful financial relief for our family during an incredibly difficult time, and we are deeply appreciative of the kindness shown to us," the family said.

The $10,000 raised through the Poker Bike Run is part of a broader effort by Elmhurst Knights of Columbus to support local families, charities and community causes, according to the organization.

Over the past year, with support from the Elmhurst community, the organization has donated more than $60,000 to local charities and causes and provided more than 4,500 hours of service to organizations and people throughout the community.

Alan Quarrie, grand knight of the local Knights of Columbus Council, said, "We are grateful for the continued support of the Elmhurst community. It allows our members to give back in meaningful ways, and we're proud of what we have been able to accomplish together over the past year."
