ELMHURST, IL – The parking lot at Super Ego Holding's U.S. trucking headquarters in Elmhurst was once jam-packed. That's not the case anymore.

Super Ego, which is under federal investigation, is believed to have left in the last two or three months.

Patch called the Serbian company's phone number, asking the person answering where Super Ego was based. The woman said she would connect Patch, but a recording said the number "cannot be connected."

An employee at the old Super Ego site at 677 N. Larch Ave. said Monday the trucking company was gone, but he didn't know where it went. He said he worked for a truck leasing and maintenance firm that now occupies part of the building.

A few trucks were on the property, but none with Super Ego markings.

Signs along Larch Avenue warn drivers not to park, sleep or turn near Chicago Water & Fire Restoration and nearby businesses. This was after Super Ego trucks twice crashed into Chicago Water's building across the street. The signs were the result of Chicago Water's lawsuit against Super Ego.

In September, developer Molto Properties of Oakbrook Terrace presented plans to the city to build an office-warehouse complex on Super Ego's site. This would mean the demolition of the existing building.

In April, "60 Minutes" reported on its eight-month investigation into Super Ego and revealed that a federal agency was looking into the company.

The firm has been accused of racking up safety violations and flouting federal regulations.

One of the issues is that "chameleon" carriers amass safety violations and then change their names to evade federal authorities, according to "60 Minutes."

The CBS program cited U.S. Department of Transportation data showing that Super Ego-linked chameleon carriers racked up nearly 15,000 safety violations and 500 crashes in the previous two years.

In 2022, a group of truckers filed a class-action lawsuit against Super Ego, which Patch reported on at the time.

The truckers alleged the company fraudulently underpaid them. The litigation continues.

After it opened locally four years ago, Super Ego was the site of frequent Elmhurst police calls. The incidents involved violence and theft, prompting the city to issue "chronic nuisance" warnings, according to police reports.
