ELMHURST, IL – Elmhurst is moving into the next phase of its police station project: The department is set to shift in-person services to a temporary station at 180 W. Park Ave. beginning at 6. p.m. Friday, the city announced Wednesday.
The new site is near the Elmhurst Public Library.
The move will allow the city to advance construction of a new police station at the department's current site, 125 E. First St. The 36-year-old building will be torn down.
According to the city, the department is expected to operate from the temporary station for about 20 months while the new facility is built.
The relocation is part of what the city described as a planned process intended to keep the department fully operational during construction.
Earlier this year, the Elmhurst City Council approved the exterior design for the new station after public meetings, community open houses, and review by city commissions and committees.
According to the city, the new building is being designed to improve accessibility and operational efficiency. The city said the station is also intended to provide the technology, space and functionality needed to support modern policing.
The city provides updates on the project on its website.
The demolition and rebuilding of the police station is expected to cost $48 million.
