A judge ordered the men to stay in jail until their trial.

The four men were charged with armed violence, unlawful possession of a machine gun, burglary, possession of a stolen motor vehicle, criminal property damage and aggravated fleeing and eluding, police said.

On Thursday, Addison police and other agencies were conducting an operation in response to gambling establishment burglaries in the suburbs, according to a news release from the DuPage County State's Attorney's Office.

Authorities alleged they saw a Black Dodge Durango and a white BMW, both reported stolen, traveling west on Lake Street from Bruce Avenue about 4:30 a.m.

Prosecutors alleged that about five minutes later, both cars backed into parking spots at Maria's Gaming Café, 40 E. Lake St. Authorities said five people, four of them armed, broke in using large sledgehammers and a crowbar, smashed gambling machines and removed cash boxes in about two minutes before fleeing.

The BMW hit spike strips as the cars left, and its three occupants got into the Durango. Prosecutors alleged Elmhurst police tried to stop the Durango at Lake Street and Route 83, but it continued onto Route 83 and then North Avenue, where Villa Park officers joined the pursuit.

Authorities said the Durango reached speeds of more than 100 mph before it was spike-stripped and its eight occupants ran across Interstate 290 into a Bellwood neighborhood near Van Buren Street and 31st Avenue.

Police said three guns fell from the Durango when the occupants got out.

Officers said they later recovered a loaded Glock 22 with a conversion device, a loaded Glock 17C, a loaded Zastava AK-style firearm, a sledgehammer, a pry bar and a cash box from the Durango. Officers also reported seeing two guns and a sledgehammer inside the BMW.

"Businesses in our community should not have to operate in fear that their windows will be broken, doors kicked in and, in a moment, their property and livelihood stolen or destroyed, by a group of armed individuals who terrorize the community with no regard for the rule of law," DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin said in the news release.
