ITASCA, IL – An Itasca man has been found guilty of breaking into an Itasca home after shooting out a sliding glass door with an AR-15 rifle, DuPage County prosecutors announced Friday.

Sean Brutto, 37, formerly of the 300 block of Prairie Circle, was found guilty Thursday by Judge Mia McPherson of four counts of home invasion and one count of aggravated discharge of a firearm at an occupied building, according to the DuPage County State's Attorney's Office.

The guilty verdict followed a three-day bench trial before McPherson. Brutto faces between 26 and 50 years in prison. He has remained in the DuPage County Jail since the 2024 incident.

The home invasion occurred mid-morning Jan. 19, 2024, on Willow Court, a few blocks from Brutto's home at the time.

Police said they found Brutto in a front yard with an AR-15 rifle. Officers ordered him to drop the weapon, which he did.

Officers then ordered him to get on the ground, and he eventually did after removing his coat and walking briefly.

Police said they recovered a loaded AR-15 with one bullet in the chamber nearby, an AR-15 magazine loaded with 25 rounds, and a box of ammunition containing 19 rounds in Brutto's coat.

Following the investigation, officers learned Brutto fired two shots in the neighborhood before firing one round through the rear sliding glass door of the Willow Court house, police said.

The round shattered the door and struck the refrigerator. The homeowner then came out of his bedroom and encountered Brutto in the second-floor hallway armed with the rifle.

After a struggle, the homeowner disarmed Brutto and tried to pass the gun over the banister to the other homeowner on the first floor. Police said Brutto then took the AR-15 back while it was being passed down the staircase and fled.
