Elmhurst Teachers’ Union Supports Local Food Pantry

For the third straight year, members of the Elmhurst Teachers’ Council, who work throughout all of the Elmhurst Community Unit District 205 schools, have generously chosen to support the Yorkfield Presbyterian Food Pantry.  The pantry is located at the Yorkfield Presbyterian Church on South York Road in Elmhurst, and it is mainly staffed by church volunteers.   In this challenging economy, demand for food at the pantry is very high.  In addition to serving families throughout the Elmhurst community, the Y.P.C. Pantry serves residents from Addison, Bensenville, Berkley, Hillside, Lombard, Northlake, and Villa Park.

The members of the Elmhurst Teachers’ Council collected $1,012, and a check for that amount was presented on March 24, 2011, to Janet Cox at the Y.P.C. Food Pantry by Nan Loerop, E.T.C. President.  Since the Pantry is able to purchase much of its food from the Northern Illinois Food Bank at a rate of $0.14 per pound, the donation by the E.T.C. members has the potential to stock the Yorkfield Presbyterian Food Pantry with over 7,200 pound of food.

The Pantry serves more than 250 families each month, so there is an ongoing need for donations.  Items that cannot be purchased through the Northern Illinois Food Bank, such as such as toilet paper, paper towels, tissues, cereal, toiletries, flavored gelatin, ramen noodles, bar soap, granola bars, muffin mix, canned beans, juice/juice boxes and condiments, are especially welcome.  Cash donations are also encouraged.  If you are interested in donating to the food pantry, please call Janet Cox at 630-858-6326 or email her at giraffe149@aol.com.  Donations may also be left in the hatch door across from the food pantry entrance.
