Another Broken Virus Record In Elmhurst: County

The city experiences one more coronavirus death in the last week.

ELMHURST, IL — Elmhurst again surged past its record of coronavirus cases in a week, according to the DuPage County Health Department.

As of Sunday, the city had seen 7,381 cases since the beginning of the pandemic, up 599 from a week before. The previous weekly record was 529, which occurred the week before. In the pandemic's last surge, weekly coronavirus cases reached a high of 248 in November 2020.

The number of coronavirus-related deaths in Elmhurst increased by one in the last week, to 75. The mortality rate among those locally with the coronavirus is 1 percent.

As of Sunday, Elmhurst had 158 coronavirus cases per thousand people since the pandemic's beginning. The figure compares to 131 in Darien, 148 in DuPage County, 150 in Hinsdale, 159 in La Grange Park, 163 in suburban Cook County, 164 in Clarendon Hills, 171 in La Grange and 173 in Western Springs.

As of Sunday, Illinois' coronavirus case count increased to 2,382,437, a 10.8 percent increase from the previous week, according to the state Department of Public Health. The number of confirmed deaths so far is 28,361.

Nationally, 59.5 million cases of the coronavirus have been reported, a 10.6 percent increase from the previous week, according to the Centers for Disease Control. A total of 834,077 people have died from the virus in the United States.
