ELMHURST, IL – A former congressman who became nationally known as a critic of Donald Trump is speaking in Elmhurst next month.

Nope, he's not a Democrat. He still calls himself a Republican.

Former U.S. Rep. Adam Kinzinger, now a CNN commentator, is set to speak April 20 at Elmhurst University.

Kinzinger did not vote for Trump in 2016, but backed the president in the 2020 election, though he later was reported as saying he felt "dirty" for doing so.

Representing the 16th District in Illinois, Kinzinger criticized Trump from time to time during Trump's four years as president. But he largely supported the billionaire.

After the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the Capitol, Kinzinger amplified his criticism of Trump. And he joined the congressional committee that investigated the attack, drawing rebukes from his fellow Republicans.

Kinzinger, a U.S. Air Force pilot, decided against running for another term in 2022. He was widely expected to lose if he did, given that he represented a Trump-friendly district.

At the university, Kinzinger is set to have a conversation with Politico reporter Shia Kapos at 7 p.m. in Hammerschmidt Memorial Chapel, 190 Prospect Ave.

Admission is $15 for the public and free for the university's students, faculty, staff and alumni. Tickets are available on the university's website.
