ELMHURST, IL – An armed youth led Elmhurst police on a car chase earlier this week, crashing into a car and injuring one of its occupants, authorities said.

About 7 p.m Tuesday, an Elmhurst officer noticed the driver of a black BMW sedan, a 17-year-old Mount Prospect boy, speeding and weaving in and out of Route 83 traffic, police said.

The youth ignored the officer, who turned on his emergency lights, according to a news release from DuPage County prosecutors.

The teen blew through a red light at Route 83 and Riverside Drive, which is near Walmart, police said. And then he crashed into a Toyota RAV-4, causing a broken leg to one of the vehicle's occupants, police said.

The youth was then arrested. Officers found a backpack containing a handgun with no serial number, otherwise known as a ghost gun, authorities said. It was reported to have an extended magazine with two dozen 9mm rounds.
