Bensenville Man Drowns At Warren Dunes State Park In Michigan

The incident involved three males from Illinois who were visiting the park, one of whom died, according to police.

BERRIEN COUNTY, MI — A Bensenville man drowned over the weekend at Warren Dunes State Park in western Michigan, according to police.

Luis Sifuentes, 38, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Authorities responded shortly after 4 p.m. Sunday to a call for a rescue involving three males from Illinois who were in the water at the park, located along Lake Michigan, according to police. Sifuentes was found about 9 feet below the water’s surface with the aid of a drone, police said.

“We want to remind people on how dangerous Lake Michigan can be and just a teaspoon of water can cause drowning,” Baroda-Lake Township Chief of Police Shawn Martin said in a news release.

One of the two remaining victims was pulled to safety by bystanders and taken to a hospital, while the other did not require medical attention, according to police.

All three victims were outside the swimming area and past the buoys at the park, police said, adding waves were 2-3 feet high during the rescue. The scene was cleared around 6 p.m., according to police.
