Bomb Squad Detonates Explosives in Elmhurst Quarry

Home-made explosives found in Berkeley were destroyed Monday at the Elmhurst Quarry.

A bomb exploded Monday in Elmhurst, and hardly anyone noticed.

Home-made explosives were found in a Berkeley home, and the Berkeley Fire Department and the Cook County Sheriff’s Bomb Disposal Unit turned to Elmhurst to help get rid it, according to the City of Elmhurst.

At about 7:45 p.m., the bomb squad used two detonations to destroy the explosives. No one even called 911 to report the sound, according to Elmhurst Police and Fire Departments.

DuPage County granted The Cook County Sheriff’s Office permission to use the quarry.

During the detonation, the scene at the quarry included Elmhurst’s Battalion Chief, Engine 1, the bomb squad, a quarry official and The Berkeley Fire Department, according to the city.
