Police officers spotted man breaking into unlocked cars in town and chased him, according to a report.

ELMHURST, IL — Many car burglaries have been reported in the suburbs in recent months, but burglars are rarely caught. That wasn't the case early Friday morning in Elmhurst, police said. About 1 a.m., Elmhurst police officers on patrol spotted a man who was breaking into unlocked cars near St. Charles Road and Fair Avenue, according to an Elmhurst Police Department Facebook post.

The man ran away from officers, but police found him hiding in an unlocked car in a resident's driveway in the 200 block of Boyd Avenue, police said. The suspect was identified Isaiah K. Smith, 23, of Schaumburg. Smith is reported as being on parole for charges related to firearms and a stolen car.

Smith was charged with five counts of attempted burglary of cars and criminal trespass of a car. He was expected in bond court over the weekend.
