Car Stolen In North Elmhurst; Police Warn Residents

ELMHURST, IL – A car was reported stolen overnight Wednesday in north Elmhurst, with the suspects departing from the more common method of such thefts.

According to police, a 2019 Kia sedan was stolen from the York Meadows Condominiums parking lot in the 800 block of North York Street.

The thieves broke a window to gain access and damaged the steering column's ignition to drive it away, police said. It was recovered hours later.

Normally, suspects check for unlocked cars and then search for keys, rather than breaking windows.

Police said residents can protect themselves from car thefts by:

• Parking cars inside a garage, if possible
• Parking in well-lit areas
• Removing all valuables from cars
• Ensuring all car doors are locked
• Removing all key fobs from cars
• Activating car alarms and security GPS tracking
• Using a steering wheel lock or similar theft prevention device
• Calling 911 immediately when spotting suspicious people overnight
