Darien Addressing Mosquito Issue

Last month was wettest May on record, city says.

DARIEN, IL — The Darien city government says May 2020 was the wettest May on record. The heavy rains triggered six hatches of floodwater mosquitoes in the Chicago area in the last week of May, the city says.

As such, the city's private contractor, Clarke Mosquito Control Services, has been focusing on treating floodwater breeding areas as well as taking other mosquito abatement measures, according to a city news release.

Here are the city's tips for reducing mosquito populations:

  • Cover trash containers to keep out rainwater.
  • Get rid of old tires, buckets, bottles or any items in your yard that may hold water.
  • Change the water in bird baths, watering cans, plant pots and drip trays at least once a week.
  • Keep grass cut short and shrubbery well-trimmed around your house so adult mosquitoes will not hide there.
