Day Two: Elmhurst Academy Olympic Games Carry On with Water and Gymnastic Events
Elmhurst Academy hosts their own Olympic Games in support of the Rio Olympics and team unity
August 9, 2016—Elmhurst Academy’s Olympic Games continued this morning with the teams as eager to start their events as the day before.
The Butterfly Team warmed up for their water relay event with some interactive water play that included fishing for colorful sea creatures. Once the students were ready, they advanced to their water event where the team was divided and competed against each other. The objective was to pass a bucket of water down the line successfully. “Our events depend on our young students’ ability, and focus on building teamwork and cooperation,” said Mrs. Tiffany Munoz, River Early Childhood Teacher.
Across the classroom, the Woodland Warriors focused on gymnastic exercises to build strength and activate certain muscle groups in their body. Their three gymnastic events involved performing somersaults, dismounting off a vault, and walking across a balance beam. Each event required the teammates to wait their turn patiently, watch and listen to their teammates for encouragement, as well as cheer on each gymnast during their event.

The team was coached by energetic Early Childhood teacher, Ms. Lucile Busleta. She taught the students how to walk like gymnasts—with good posture, a tightened body and their arms straight. Also, the students learned how to dismount with a jump in the air and arms lifted above their heads.
Today, the Lakeview Lizards were unable to partake in any Olympic events due to an off-campus field trip to the Cosley Zoo. Although the team was missed, the students received an incredible extension to their “Growing Up Wild” summer curriculum that strives to provide students with crucial nature and wildlife experiences. At the zoo, the students were introduced to a variety of animals and wildlife, learning more about their habitats, characteristics, dietary habits, and much more.
