Democrats Poised To Hold DuPage County Board

In every district, a Democrat was the top vote-getter, unofficial results show.

ELMHURST, IL – Democrats kept control of the DuPage County Board in Tuesday's election, continuing its edge over Republicans, according to unofficial returns.

The party appeared poised to win 10 of the board's 18 seats. Currently, the Democrats have an 11-seat majority.

Voters in each of the board's six districts got to choose three candidates. In each race, a Democrat was the top vote-getter.

Democrats reached a board majority in 2020 in the traditionally Republican county. In the two years before that, all the women on the board were Democrats, the men were Republicans.

Districts 1 and 2 cover Elmhurst. In District 1, Democrat Michael Childress and Republicans Sam Tornatore and Cindy Cronin Cahill prevailed. Republican incumbent Donald Puchalski lost.

In District 2, Democrat Yeena Yoo, a former Elmhurst City Council candidate, was the top vote-getter, followed by Democratic incumbent Liz Chaplin and Republican Sean Noonan.

Losing in District 2 were Democratic incumbent Paula Deacon Garcia and Republicans Daniel Kordik and Nicole Marie Giannini.

As of Wednesday morning, Democrat Deb Conroy held the lead in the race for DuPage County Board chairman, with 51 percent of the vote. Her opponent was Greg Hart of Hinsdale. She would succeed Dan Cronin of Elmhurst, who has been at the helm for a dozen years.

The new term starts Dec. 1.
