ELMHURST, IL — Repair Geekz in Elmhurst, which has been the target of customers' complaints, was evicted last week. And officers have taken possession of customers' equipment for safekeeping, Elmhurst police announced Wednesday.

In a statement, police said they have received numerous complaints about Repair Geekz, 927 S. York St., with customers unable to retrieve their items that they put in the shop's care to be repaired. Patch published yet another story late last month about the issues with Repair Geekz.

The police department said it determined that the business owner, whom it did not name, stopped communicating with customers, closed the business to the public and did not return equipment. An eviction was already in process, with the DuPage County Sheriff's Office executing the eviction last Monday.

"Due to the unusual nature of this situation and the concern for identity theft, members of the Elmhurst Police Department collected numerous electronics for safekeeping," the police said in the statement. "Officers found the storage area of the business to be extremely disorganized, with many unlabeled electronic items in various states of disassembly."

The items were taken to the police station, inventoried and stored securely, so customers may reunite with their equipment, police said.

"Customers are cautioned that most items recovered from the business were in damaged or disassembled condition when discovered," police said in the statement.

A person associated with Repair Geekz has been in trouble with the law a number of times, a history that is documented in last month's Patch story.

Repair Geekz customers are asked to call the police to set up appointments to view recovered items. They should be prepared to provide information on their transactions with the business, including receipts, items serial numbers, or detailed descriptions or photos they possess to help identify property, police said.
