DuPage County Tornado Sirens Go Off By Mistake

ELMHURST, IL – Tornado sirens went off by mistake about 3 a.m. Tuesday in DuPage County, authorities said.

The county's 911 agency, DuPage Public Safety Communications, said Tuesday morning that its staff attempted to conduct a planned test of the weather siren activation systems.

During the test, an employee accidentally activated the sirens, which were deactivated as soon as the error was realized, the agency said.

"We regret that our error caused unnecessary interruption or confusion," the agency said. "We sincerely apologize."

Shortly after the sirens were heard, Villa Park police posted on Facebook that they were alerted that the sirens were accidentally activated in many of the county's towns.

"There is no weather emergency at this time," the police said.

The National Weather Service tweeted about the issue.

"We have no idea, as nothing was triggered from our office. We are hearing this may have been countywide per several other people," the agency said.
