ELMHURST, IL – The Elmhurst-based DuPage Water Commission says it may build its own system to deliver Lake Michigan water for the county's towns, the Chicago Tribune reported this week.

This statement follows apparently contentious negotiations between the commission and Chicago on how much the commission pays the city for the lake's water.

Jim Zay, the commission's chairman, acknowledged to the newspaper it would be a big cost to build a separate system.

“I’ve been the chairman for 12 years. And if anytime over the last eight years or so, you would think that we would venture into a project like that, I probably would have said, ‘You’re crazy.’ But we’ve basically been pushed in this direction” because of the negotiations, Zay told the Tribune.
