What's competitive?

Elmhurst has no local competitive races.

You've likely been seeing a lot of ads for congressional seats in the suburbs. That's because the state is seeing musical chairs with the retirement of U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin.

But Elmhurst voters won't get to weigh in on such competition.

Most of the city is represented by Democratic Rep. Jesus "Chuy" Garcia, who is retiring. His 4th District includes far southwestern Elmhurst as well as east of York Street, going north to North Avenue.

Garcia announced his departure just before the filing deadline. His chief of staff, Patty Garcia, was the only one who got an early heads-up. So she gathered enough petition signatures in time, allowing her to run unopposed. Many have criticized Garcia for his late announcement.

Lupe Castillo is running in the 4th District's GOP primary. The district is strongly Democratic, thanks to gerrymandering.

The rest of Elmhurst is in the 6th District, with Democratic Rep. Sean Casten as the incumbent. He is running against Joey Ruzevich, who is positioning himself as the progressive in the race.

The Senate election is attracting the most attention. It's a Democratic three-way race with Lt. Gov. Julia Stratton and U.S. Reps. Raja Krishnamoorthi and Robin Kelly.

Running on the Republican side are Casey Chlebek, Don Tracy, R. Cary Capparelli, Pamela Denise Long, Jimmy Lee Tillman II and Jeannie Evans.

For governor, J.B. Pritzker is running unopposed in the Democratic primary.

Republicans Ted Dabrowski, James Mendrick, Darren Bailey and Rick Heidner are vying for the GOP nod. This time, no big donors are helping any of the GOP candidates.
