Elmhurst Blows Past Virus Record Again: County

ELMHURST, IL — Elmhurst surged past its record of coronavirus cases in a week, according to the DuPage County Health Department.

As of Sunday, the city had seen 6,782 cases since the beginning of the pandemic, up 529 from a week before. The previous weekly record was 336, which occurred the week before. The last surge reached a high of 248 in November 2020.

The number of coronavirus-related deaths in Elmhurst stayed the same in the last week, at 74. The mortality rate among those locally with the coronavirus is 1.1 percent.

As of Sunday, Elmhurst had 145 coronavirus cases per thousand people since the pandemic's beginning. The figure compares to 120 in Darien, 137 in DuPage County, 140 in Hinsdale and La Grange, 143 in La Grange Park, 149 in suburban Cook County, 152 in Clarendon Hills and 159 in Western Springs.

As of Sunday, Illinois' coronavirus case count increased to 2,149,548, a 6.3 percent increase from the previous week, according to the state Department of Public Health. The number of confirmed deaths so far is 27,821.

Nationally, 53.8 million cases of the coronavirus have been reported, a 4.3 percent increase from the previous week, according to the Centers for Disease Control. A total of 820,355 people have died from the virus in the United States.
