Elmhurst College Art Faculty Present 'Living Large' Exhibition

In their bold exhibition “Living Large: Examining The American Dream,” two members of the Elmhurst College art faculty express their concern for the environment and other impacts of consumerism and the American way of life.

In Living Large, Geoff Sciacca, associate professor of graphic design, and Dustan Creech, assistant professor of sculpture and printmaking, explore these notions: “We give up farmland for subdivisions so we can build oversized homes to hide ourselves and all that we’ve accumulated. Like our homes and cars, our appetites and sense of entitlement have grown. We are a nation of consumers, yet are never actually satisfied. We care only about ourselves—we are truly living the American Dream!”

Living Large: Examining The American Dream will run from Thursday, March 12, through Thursday, April 16, in the Barbara A. Kieft Accelerator ArtSpace. A reception with the artists will be held on Thursday, March 12, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., with an artists’ talk at 5:00 p.m. Both the exhibition and reception are free and open to the public.

The Barbara A. Kieft Accelerator ArtSpace is located in the 200 block of West Park Avenue, just behind the College’s Mill Theatre (www.elmhurst.edu/campusmap). The Accelerator ArtSpace is open on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from noon to 4:00 p.m. For more information, call (630) 617-3390.

The exhibition is one of about a dozen art shows that Elmhurst College hosts each academic year in two campus venues. In addition, the College’s A.C. Buehler Library permanently houses the College’s unparalleled collection of Chicago Imagist and Abstractionist Art, which explores the vibrant, often outrageous, yet precisely crafted works of Chicago artists between 1950 and the present.
