Elmhurst Commission on Youth Sponsors Campus Sexual Assault Awareness Program

Young men and women are encouraged to attend this important program.

20-25% of college women are the target of attempted or actual sexual assault. According to multiple studies, female students are at an increased risk during their first few weeks of the first semester on campus. This time period is known as the "Red Zone" - a period of vulnerability to sexual assaults beginning when freshmen first walk on campus until Thanksgiving break. While the only person responsible for a rape is a rapist, young women need to understand the risks to better keep themselves and friends from becoming victims.

On Tuesday, August 2nd, 2016, the Elmhurst Commission on Youth, in partnership with Pathways to Healing, invites young women heading off to college this fall to attend an informational program designed to assist them in identifying and avoiding potential situations that could lead to a sexual assault. Pathways to Healing Director of Community Outreach and Engagement Kerry O'Connor, RN, BSN, SANE, will provide a wealth of information on reducing the risk of becoming a victim and address myths about sexual assault and the consequences, as well as actions to take should one ever involved as a victim, friend or bystander.

This program will begin at 7:00 p.m. at the Elmhurst Public Library, 125 S. Prospect Ave., Elmhurst, IL. Attendance is free but seating is limited.
