Elmhurst Cops Saved Distraught Teen: City
The teen was standing on a ledge at a downtown parking garage when officers came to the rescue, according to a city statement.

ELMHURST, IL – Four Elmhurst officers are being credited with saving the life of a distraught teen more than a year ago, the city said Monday.
On April 11, 2023, officers responded to a report of a teen standing on the seventh-floor ledge of a downtown parking garage, according to a city news release.
Officers tried to communicate with the teen. Then a police department crisis negotiation team arrived and built a rapport with the teen, the city said.

"Eventually, the negotiator was able to take hold of the teen’s hand, which created an opportunity for three officers to approach and pull the teen over the ledge railing to safety," the city said in the news release.
At Monday's City Council meeting, Detective Joan Velez, Officers Michael Hamblin, Officer James O'Connor and Deputy Chief James Gandy are set to be honored. Representatives of the Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police plan to present the officers with the Life Saving Award.
