Elmhurst D205 Seeks $7M More From Taxpayers

The owner of a $500,000 house will pay nearly $250 more next year, the district said.

ELMHURST, IL – Elmhurst School District 205 is seeking the maximum allowable property tax increase for next year.

Under state law, a public body can increase its property tax levy by the rate of inflation up to 5 percent.

As of December 2023 – when the inflation rate is gauged for tax purposes – it was 3.4 percent.

On Tuesday, the school board unanimously approved to hike the tax levy by 3.4 percent on existing buildings.

That means a levy of $158 million, including for new construction. That's an increase of $7 million from this year.

By the district's estimate, the owner of a $500,000 house should see a property tax increase of $245. The school system takes up about three-quarters of the local property tax bill.

The district presented numbers showing its tax rate is lower than kindergarten-through-12-grade districts in Barrington, Batavia, Wheaton, Geneva, Naperville and St. Charles.
