ELMHURST, IL – The Elmhurst school board on Tuesday voted to dip into its bank accounts for $7 million to pay for the district's building projects.

"This has been planned for years," said Chris Whelton, assistant superintendent of finance. "This amount is in the budget."

The board made the same transfer last year and plans to do so again next year, for a total of $21 million.

These transfers are the result of the expanded scope of projects, particularly the one to replace Field Elementary School. The new Field is larger because of expected increases in enrollment.

In 2018, voters approved the district's request to go $168.5 million into debt to pay for projects, which are winding up. The district expects to spend $23 million over that amount, which officials say the district can afford.
