Elmhurst Hits Low In New Virus Cases: County

ELMHURST, IL — Elmhurst saw the lowest weekly rate of increase in new coronavirus cases since the onset of the crisis.

As of Sunday, the city saw 70 new coronavirus cases in the last week, or a 2 percent increase, for a total of 3,531. That is down from the previous week's 2.6 percent.

Since early October, the number of local coronavirus cases has more than tripled in Elmhurst. The number of those who have recovered is unavailable.

As of Sunday, coronavirus-related deaths in Elmhurst since the pandemic's beginning stayed the same at 57 over the last week. The mortality rate among those locally with the coronavirus is 1.6 percent.

Elmhurst's rate of increase of 2 percent was lower than DuPage County's hike of 2.2 percent in the last week. Elmhurst makes up 5.2 percent of the county's population and 5.1 percent of the county's coronavirus caseload.

As of Sunday, Elmhurst had 75.5 coronavirus cases per thousand people. The figure compares to 65.2 in La Grange Park, 65.7 in Darien, 67.6 in Western Springs, 71.4 in Hinsdale, 74.3 in DuPage County, 78.7 in Clarendon Hills, 82.2 in suburban Cook County, 86.3 in Burr Ridge and 91.3 in La Grange (including unincorporated La Grange Highlands).

As of Sunday, Illinois' coronavirus case count increased to 1,126,301, up 2.3 percent from a week earlier. The coronavirus has claimed the lives of 19,243 state residents.

Nationally, 25.9 million people have caught the virus, up 4.2 percent from the week before. A total of 438,035 people have died from the virus in the United States.

As of Monday, Elmhurst Hospital was caring for 38 patients with confirmed cases of COVID-19, the illness caused by the coronavirus, according to the hospital. That was the same number as a week ago.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, 162 people have died from the coronavirus at the facility. The number is up by six from a week ago.

Since March, 1,407 patients have been discharged from Elmhurst Hospital following treatment for confirmed cases of COVID-19, according to the hospital. Elmhurst Hospital's patient base covers an area far greater than Elmhurst itself.
