Elmhurst Homeschooled Student Heads To Thailand For Competition

ELMHURST, IL – Antonia Figueroa, a homeschooled high school student from Elmhurst, has qualified to travel to Thailand this summer for the International Geography Bee, sponsored by International Academic Competitions.

In 2024, she competed in Vienna and was part of the three-person team that won the International Geography Bowl. Competitors engaged in Jeopardy-style buzzer competitions, Family Feud-style team quizzes, and written exams, among other games.

Her mother and father both went through layoffs in 2025, which has spurred them to fundraise for her competition fees and travel to the event. They launched a GoFundMe yesterday that has already raised more than $1000 from family and friends. We have until the end of the month to raise airfare and registration fees.
