Elmhurst Hospital Treats Most Virus Patients In Year
The number of deaths is far lower than previous surges in the pandemic.

ELMHURST, IL — Elmhurst Hospital on Monday was treating the greatest number of coronavirus patients in more than a year, its latest numbers show.
As of Wednesday, the hospital was taking care of 70 coronavirus patients. That was 18 more than four days ago. Of the 70 patients, 20 were vaccinated and 33 were not, according to the hospital. Six others remain undetermined.
The hospital has not seen this many coronavirus patients since Dec. 3, 2020, when it was treating 71. The hospital's all-time high of 84 was on Nov. 17, 2020.

As of Monday, 215 people have died of the coronavirus at the hospital, five more than a month ago. While coronavirus cases have increased dramatically, the number of deaths is far lower than previous surges.
Elmhurst Hospital serves an area far larger than Elmhurst. But the city's numbers are an indicator of what's happening. Last week, Elmhurst experienced 336 new coronavirus cases, the highest weekly number throughout the pandemic. The previous local record was 248 cases in November 2020.
