Elmhurst Hospital Virus Caseload Plunges

ELMHURST, IL — The number of patients with the coronavirus has dropped by a third in the last five days at Elmhurst Hospital, according to its latest numbers.

As of Tuesday, the hospital was treating 71 patients with the coronavirus, down from its record high of 105 last Thursday.

Of the hospital's coronavirus patients, 42 are unvaccinated, 24 are vaccinated and one partially vaccinated, according to its report. Information has not been collected and posted for four of the patients.

In DuPage County, more than 70 percent of residents are fully vaccinated, according to the county health department.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, 251 patients with confirmed cases of COVID-19 have died at the hospital, up by five since late last week.

Elmhurst's sister facility, Edward Hospital in Naperville, reported that it was treating 75 coronavirus patients Tuesday. That's down from its record of 123 nearly two weeks ago.

Since March 2020, Elmhurst Hospital has discharged 2,720 COVID-19 patients, nearly 80 of them since late last week.

Elmhurst Hospital serves an area far larger than Elmhurst. But the city's numbers are an indicator of what's happening. Last week, Elmhurst experienced 359 new coronavirus cases. That was a drop from the previous week's 559. The record was 599 a week before that.
