Elmhurst Kmart To Close

The Elmhurst Kmart on Route 83 will close by mid-November.

ELMHURST, IL — Sears Holdings announced the closure of 28 Kmart stores, including the Kmart located at 265 S. Route 83 in Elmhurst. According to a release from the city, a specific date for the closure is not known at this time, but it is anticipated that the Elmhurst Kmart will close by mid-November.

According to the city, Elmhurst has a strong history of cooperation with the Elmhurst Crossings Management Team, and city staff has been in contact with the management company today and will work in conjunction with them and Sears Holdings to plan for the closing of this Kmart location and identify a replacement tenant for the approximately 110,000 square foot site.

Thanks in part to shoppers migrating to the web from the malls, Sears sales at stores open for at least a year fell 11.5 percent in the second quarter ended July 29, the company announced.

Total revenue fell 22 percent to $4.37 billion, mainly due to store closures, which shaved off $770 million of revenue, the company said. Dozens of Sears and Kmart stores have already closed this year as the company tries to overcome steep losses in sales and huge operating costs.

Two other Illinois Kmart locations will close, one in Oak Lawn and one in Belleville.
