ELMHURST, IL — Elmhurst Alderwoman Jennifer Veremis called in to Monday's City Council meeting, saying there was a reason for that — the coronavirus.

"Last Monday, I tested positive, and thankfully, my symptoms have been very mild," said Veremis, who represents Ward 1. "Unfortunately, COVID isn't entirely behind us. We need to remain diligent with our safety protocols."

Veremis, who owns The Beauty Lounge in Elmhurst, encouraged business owners to bring back their mask policies.

"One too many times, I've heard from owners who have had to deal with defiant customers, and we are all doing the best we can," Veremis said.

She said she was vaccinated in April and that she leads a "very healthy, clean lifestyle," yet she has the coronavirus.

According to the CDC, more than 99 percent of recent coronavirus deaths in the United States were of unvaccinated people.
