Elmhurst Private School Reinstated By State

Agency says the school has shown it will comply with mask mandate.

ELMHURST, IL — A state agency informed Timothy Christian Schools in Elmhurst on Friday it has reinstated its recognized status.

The school removed that designation on Wednesday after the school's superintendent, Matt Davidson, announced it was going mask optional. That was despite Gov. J.B. Pritzker's mask mandate for all public and private schools.

After the Illinois State Board of Education pulled the status, the school announced that it had reversed itself. The state board said it had evidence that the school was again in compliance. School starts Aug. 25.

"Please be aware that ISBE will continue to investigate any received complaints of noncompliance," Carmen Ayala, state superintendent of education, told the school in a letter. "If we determine that the schools are no longer in compliance with the mandate, both schools will be returned to "Nonrecognized" status."

In a statement, Davidson said the outcome was anticipated and that he appreciated the state board's prompt response.

"For the glory of God, it is going to be a great year for Timothy Christian Schools ... actually, it's going to be our best yet," he said.

The school's enrollment is more than 1,200. And the school said more than 250 churches are represented at the school.

"And yet we will start school on August 25 united. We will love and respect one another. I'm certain of it. So this can be done elsewhere ... and even statewide. It's time to start school," Davidson said.

The removal of recognized status, among other things, would have prevented the school from participating in Illinois High School Association athletics.

From the beginning, Davidson said the school was investigating the legality of the governor's order. He said the school would not support "outright defiance" of the rule.
