Elmhurst Proposes Upping Speed Limit On Neighborhood's Streets

ELMHURST, IL – Elmhurst officials are considering a proposal to increase the speed limit on several streets in the southeast part of town.

A city consultant has recommended hiking the limit to 25 mph, from 20 mph, on Webster Avenue and sections of May, South and Vallette streets.

The recommendation comes as part of a traffic study of the neighborhood bound by St. Charles Road on the north, Interstate 290 on the east, the Canadian National railroad tracks on the south and York Street to the west.

On Monday, the City Council's public safety committee plans to review the traffic study's recommendations at 7 p.m. at City Hall.

In Elmhurst, 25 mph is the default speed limit in residential areas. The consultant has called for consistency in past neighborhood studies.

Two years ago, the consultant, Rosemont-based KLOA, recommended the same increase for a neighborhood to the west of the current one.

Neighbors, however, argued that the speed limit should stay as it was, given cut-through traffic.

The City Council voted 7-6 to raise the limit.
