Elmhurst Sees Most Virus Cases Since January: County

ELMHURST, IL – Elmhurst saw the most new coronavirus cases in a week since January, according to the DuPage County Health Department.

As of Sunday, the city had seen 10,094 cases since the beginning of the pandemic, up 179 from a week before. That's higher than the previous week's 93. The city hit a weekly record of 599 in January.

The number of coronavirus-related deaths in Elmhurst increased by one in the last week, to 96. The mortality rate among those locally with the coronavirus is 1 percent.

As of Sunday, Elmhurst has 216 coronavirus cases per thousand people since the pandemic's beginning. The figure compares to 190 in Darien, 193 in Hinsdale, 209 in DuPage County, 216 in suburban Cook County, 225 in La Grange Park, 229 in Clarendon Hills and Western Springs, and 245 in La Grange.

As of Sunday, Illinois' coronavirus case count increased to 3,169,315, a hike of 1 percent, according to the state Department of Public Health. The number of confirmed deaths so far is 33,660.

Nationally, 81.7 million cases of the coronavirus have been reported, an increase of 0.7 percent in the last week, according to the Centers for Disease Control. A total of 995,823 people have died from the virus in the United States.
