Elmhurst Sees Most Virus Cases In Year: County
The city experiences one more coronavirus death in the last week.
ELMHURST, IL — Elmhurst just saw the most weekly coronavirus cases in a year, according to the DuPage County Health Department.
As of Sunday, the city had seen 5,917 cases since the beginning of the pandemic, up 195 from a week before. This is the highest weekly number in a year. The week before last, Elmhurst experienced an increase of 110 new cases. In mid-December 2020, the city saw 239 new coronavirus cases in a week.
The number of coronavirus-related deaths in Elmhurst increased by one in the last week, to 73. The mortality rate among those locally with the coronavirus is 1.2 percent.

As of Sunday, Elmhurst had 127 coronavirus cases per thousand people since the pandemic's beginning. The figure compares to 109 in Darien, 123 in DuPage County and Hinsdale, 127 in La Grange Park, 134 in suburban Cook County, 135 in Clarendon Hills, 136 in La Grange and 140 in Western Springs.

As of Sunday, Illinois' coronavirus case count increased to 1,944,056, a 3.2 percent increase from the previous week, according to the state Department of Public Health. The number of confirmed deaths so far is 27,117.
Nationally, 50.6 million cases of the coronavirus have been reported, a 1.8 percent increase from the previous week, according to the Centers for Disease Control. A total of 802,969 people have died from the virus in the United States.
