Elmhurst Sees Slightly Lower Virus Rate: County

ELMHURST, IL — Elmhurst saw a slightly lower rate of increase in new coronavirus cases last week, according to the DuPage County Health Department.

As of Sunday, the city experienced 39 new cases in the last week, or a 1.1 percent increase, for a total of 3,694. That is down from the previous week's increase of 1.2 percent.

The number of those who have recovered is unavailable.

As of Sunday, coronavirus-related deaths in Elmhurst increased by one over the last week, to 60. The mortality rate among those locally with the coronavirus is 1.6 percent.

Elmhurst's rate of increase of 1.1 percent was higher than DuPage County's hike of 1 percent in the last week. Elmhurst makes up 5.2 percent of the county's population and 5.1 percent of the county's coronavirus caseload.

As of Sunday, Elmhurst had 79 coronavirus cases per thousand people. The figure compares to 68.4 in La Grange Park, 69.5 in Darien, 72.6 in Western Springs, 75.7 in Hinsdale, 77.9 in DuPage County, 82.4 in Clarendon Hills, 86.5 in suburban Cook County, 91 in Burr Ridge and 96.5 in La Grange (including unincorporated La Grange Highlands).

As of Sunday, Illinois' coronavirus case count increased to 1,186,696, up 1.2 percent from a week earlier. The coronavirus has claimed the lives of 20,516 state residents.

Nationally, 28.3 million people have caught the virus, up 1.7 percent from the week before. A total of 508,949 people have died from the virus in the United States.

As of Monday, Elmhurst Hospital was caring for nine patients with confirmed cases of COVID-19, the illness caused by the coronavirus, according to the hospital. That is down by six from the previous week.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, 173 people have died from the coronavirus at the facility. The number is up by one from a week ago.

Since March, 1,544 patients have been discharged from Elmhurst Hospital following treatment for confirmed cases of COVID-19, according to the hospital. Elmhurst Hospital's patient base covers an area far greater than Elmhurst itself.
