Elmhurst Shows Insensitivity Toward 92-Year-Old On Code Issue

This letter to the editor is from Elmhurst resident Michael Grandolfo Sr.:

I am writing to bring attention to a troubling pattern of code enforcement in the City of Elmhurst that feels harsh and insensitive, particularly toward one of our community’s most vulnerable populations — our elderly residents.

Recently, a 92‑year‑old long‑time homeowner with deep roots in Elmhurst was cited and pressured to remove a shed that had stood on his property for over 63 years. The enforcement action came without reasonable accommodation or consideration of the homeowner’s age, years of responsible ownership, or the historical nature of the structure.

While municipal codes serve an important purpose, enforcement that fails to consider context — especially the age and ability of residents — can easily shift from public safety to unnecessary hardship. In this case, the lack of empathy and apparent rigidity in applying the code left neighbors feeling distressed and unfairly targeted, not to mention the emotional toll on an elderly homeowner who has lived in his home for decades.

Elmhurst is known as a community that values respect, neighborliness, and support for residents of all ages. I respectfully urge city officials to review how code enforcement is administered, especially when reports involve seniors who have long contributed to this city’s fabric. More compassionate approaches and clear guidelines for reasonable accommodations — especially for long‑standing structures — should be considered to prevent unnecessary distress.
