Fatal Crash At North Elmhurst Intersection: Cops

ELMHURST, IL – A fatal traffic crash was reported Friday morning at a north Elmhurst intersection where residents have pushed for a traffic light.

The crash was about 7 a.m. at York Street and Diversey Avenue, Elmhurst police said.

The local police and fire departments are at the site of the crash, which involved a car and an adult pedestrian, police said.

Drivers are urged to avoid northbound York Street and use alternate routes on Lake Street or Grand Avenue.

Police provided no other information.

In February 2020, former Mayor Pete DiCianni showed up at a City Council meeting to push for a traffic light at the intersection. He said several hundred people signed a petition in favor of it.

He said too many accidents have happened at the intersection, resulting in injuries and one death.

Another resident also spoke in favor of a light at the meeting. Patch wrote a story about the issue.
