ELMHURST, IL — An Elmhurst-based hair business that works exclusively to provide wigs for women who have lost their hair due to cancer treatment, is again holding a "free wig giveaway." 50 women undergoing cancer treatment will be given wigs for free during the fifth annual Chrysalis Custom Hair Wig Giveaway for Women Cancer Patients held by Chrysalis Custom Hair held this month.

Chrysalis Co-Owner Kimberly Johnson says this year's giveaway is going to be their best yet.

"We have support from so many wonderful nurses and social workers helping us to get the word out to women in need," Johnson said. "This year we have materials in Spanish as well as English so that many more patients may register."

Chrysalis will draw 50 names at random on Oct. 20 and recipients will be notified by email two days later should they be selected. Those who could benefit from this giveaway are encouraged to register here by clicking on the banner at the bottom of the page. It's open through the 20th.

Donated wigs have been cleaned, styled and refurbished and are ready for redistribution at no extra cost.

Women cancer patients may register for as many as they’d like, Johnson said. They will be asked to provide documentation that they have been or currently are in treatment to be a recipient.

Those who are selected in the drawing will be invited to a wig fitting party on Oct. 29 at Chrysalis' Elmhurst location. Anyone who lives 85 miles away or who has a health issue that would not allow them to attend will be mailed a wig.

Johnson says this yearly endeavor is Chrysalis' way to give back to the community.

"So many women in cancer treatment do not have the means for a custom wig that looks natural," she said. "It’s our way of giving back to the cancer community, who have been supportive of our efforts to help women cancer patients since the inception of Chrysalis Custom Hair in 2012.

“It’s so fulfilling to see our efforts at restoring and distributing these wigs come to fruition. The hugs and 'happy crying' makes it all worth the year long effort to put this event together.”
