Geek Squad Imposters Target Elmhurst Residents: Cops
Local police receive two reports of the widespread scam this week.
ELMHURST, IL – Scammers purporting to be with Best Buy's Geek Squad are targeting Elmhurst residents, police said.
On Tuesday, local police received two reports of residents receiving emails from Geek Squad imposters.
The first resident told police she received an email from an imposter claiming she was charged $273, police said. The victim called the phone number listed in the email and provided personal information.

Access was gained to her checking account, which was later closed, police said.
In the second report, a woman said she also received an email stating she owed money on her Geek Squad account.

She called the number in the email and was told to wire the money, which she did. She realized it was a scam after she sent the money, police said.
A number of news stories indicate the Geek Squad imposter scam is widespread.
