Hawthorn Fifth Grader Draws Winning Holiday Card Design

Lucy Baird received copies of her card and a personalized hardhat, along with a few other cool prizes.

Each year since 2006, James McHugh Construction Company has asked District 205 elementary school students to design a holiday/construction card which McHugh uses for the cover of their annual holiday card.

This is completely voluntary project. The school with the winning artwork always receives a $500 check from McHugh and the winning artist is also honored by McHugh Senior Vice President Mike Meagher. The winner receives copies of his/her card and a personalized hardhat, along with a few other cool prizes, and the class receives goodies as well.

This year, Hawthorne fifth grader Lucy Baird, daughter of John and Heidi Baird, drew the winning design. Her card and pictures/video from McHugh’s visit to Hawthorne are posted on the Hawthorne Facebook page.

Also, in other holiday card news, Elmhurst District 205 always features student artwork on its holiday card by seeking art from its 13 schools (with help from the art teachers) on a rotating basis. This year’s card features artwork by Sandburg Middle School seventh graders Caroline Collins, Aidan Landreth, Yari Navar, Julia Olander, Jack Schlitz, Eric Seidenfuss, Payton Wasserman and Emma Williams. Art teacher Jennifer Leban took pictures of the ceramic letters they created last year as sixth grade students and merged them into the PEACE/JOY message that adorns the 2014 card
