Leyden Township boxer undefeated in 10th professional bout

Mioletti, up-and-coming Super featherweight, defeats veteran boxer in Northlake Natex Boxing Night

Four of the five bouts Saturday at the Midwest Conference Center, in Northlake, went the distance proving host Natex Boxing Promoter Andrew Sobko had scheduled a solid slate of fights for the packed house. One of those fights gave up-and-coming super featherweight boxer Giovanni Cabrera Mioletti of Leyden Township his tenth victory in ten professional bouts.

Cabrera Mioletti was fighting veteran boxer Tyrone Harris from Lansing, MI. Harris entered the bout with a 26-11-0 record. He won 16 of his fights by knockout and has earned several title belts. In 2007, Harris won the Global Boxing Union World Lightweight Title by defeating Pascali Adorno.

Cabrera Mioletti was a favorite of the crowd, which frequently broke out in chants of “Gio! Gio! Gio! …” during the bout.

As might be expected from the veteran, Harris fought a smart fight allowing the younger Cabrera Mioletti to bring the fight to him. With a less-disciplined fighter, Harris’s strategy probably would have worked. But, the mix of energy and refined style that Cabrera Mioletti displayed was too much for the veteran boxer. Cabrera Mioletti, who had Natex Boxing Director John Nocita in his corner, was the unanimous victor with two judges scoring the fight 77-75 and one judge scoring it 78-74.

In the final bout of the night, a middleweight contest, Dmytro Mytrofanov, a crowd favorite, was led into the ring by a ring girl carrying the Ukrainian flag of his home country where he held the Ukrainian National Title in 2008 and 2012. He defeated Marcus Willis in a hard-fought 8-round bout by unanimous decision. All three judges scored the fight 80-72.

Mytrofanov is 19-5-0 after his fight with Willis, and a massive left hook has played a significant role in helping him to establish that impressive record. Willis put up a good fight, and landed some solid blows, but nothing he dished out seemed to faze Mytrofanov who kept constant pressure on the Fort Myers, FL, native.

Shady Gamhour, a middleweight who has won all five of his professional bouts by KO, had boxing great Roy Jones, Jr., in his corner. Gamhour dominated his fight with Jauvan John from the opening bell. However, that didn’t mean that the fight wasn’t a challenge.

John is a southpaw, which required Gamhour to adjust his style. “The plan was to box … to be smart,” said Gamhour. “I knew he was a southpaw. That’s why (I used) pop shots not going for the big shots early.” His strategy worked as he drove John to his knees on two or more occasions.

Martez McGregor, 5-1-0 from Maywood, was also facing a southpaw in Scott Futrell. Their 4-round light heavyweight bout was packed with action from two powerful light-heavy boxers. In their 4-round bout, both boxers landed good blows. But, McGregor had the edge and the judges unanimously scored the fight 39-37.

The opening bout was between heavyweights Ricardo Chavez and Thad Berkhousen, the prior from Chicago and the latter from St. Johns, MI. Chavez brought the fight to Berkhousen but at about the middle of the first round, the taller Berkhousen knocked Chavez to the matt. Chavez fought the rest of the fight with blood flowing from his nose. However, that didn’t mean the fight was over.

Chavez caught Berkhousen with numerous solid blows and it seemed Berkhousen was tiring as the fight entered its 3rd and 4th rounds. But, every time Chavez caught Berkhousen with a solid blow, Berkousen would return the favor. Berkhousen won by unanimous decision with two of the judges scoring the fight 40-35 and one 39-36.
