Man Gets 18 Years In Yorktown Mall Shooting That Wounded Female: Prosecutors

LOMBARD, IL – A Kentucky man has been sentenced to 18 years in prison after pleading guilty in the 2022 shooting at Yorktown Mall in Lombard, prosecutors said Monday.

Ronald Grundy, 26, of Louisville, pleaded guilty to one felony count of aggravated battery with a firearm, according to a news release from the DuPage County State's Attorney's Office. Judge Margaret O'Connell imposed the sentence.

According to the state's attorney's office, the shooting happened during the afternoon of Nov. 11, 2022, near the JCPenney parking lot at Yorktown Mall.

Lombard police responded to a report of shots fired and spoke with the victims, identified as two males and one female, police said.

Prosecutors said the victims were at the mall when they were confronted by Grundy and Jakobi Kinsey, 27, of Chicago. One of the men allegedly asked the victims, "You good?"

Shortly after, the victims left the mall and went to their car. The suspects saw the car, ran to theirs and drove toward the victims' vehicle, police said.

The news release states that Grundy leaned out of the passenger-side window and fired multiple shots, striking the female victim in the arm.

Police later found five 9mm spent casings at the scene, prosecutors said. The woman underwent surgery to remove the bullet and has since recovered, they said.

"The complete disregard for human life and the rule of law Mr. Grundy exhibited that day is almost unimaginable," DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin said in the news release.

Grundy was denied bail in bond court on Nov. 15, 2022, and has remained in the DuPage County Jail since then, prosecutors said. He will be required to serve 85 percent of his sentence before being eligible for parole.

The case against Kinsey remains pending. He was charged with one count of aggravated battery with a firearm and three counts of aggravated discharge of a firearm, all felonies.
