ELMHURST, IL – A man broke into his ex-girlfriend's apartment in Addison, forced her into his car and kidnapped her, police said Monday.

Tomie Nickles III, 33, of Chicago, was charged with one count of home invasion causing injury, one count of residential burglary, two counts of kidnapping, six counts of domestic battery and two counts of unlawful restraint, police said.

A DuPage County judge ordered Nickles to stay in jail until his trial.

The charges stem from an incident that occurred about 4:30 a.m. March 8 in Addison.

DuPage County prosecutors alleged the woman was asleep in her apartment when she was awakened by a crash and saw her ex-boyfriend, later identified as Nickles, standing in the hallway by her bedroom door.

Police said Nickles, who had told the victim his name was Michael Tara, grabbed her by the arm and neck, dragged her from the apartment through the courtyard to a car parked outside, forced her into the front passenger seat and drove away, police said.

While she was in the car, prosecutors alleged, Nickles held her by the neck and face and pushed her face into the passenger window.

Authorities said Nickles eventually drove the victim back to her home and let her leave the car, police said. The victim then called Addison police.

Police identified Nickles as a suspect the same day, with a judge issuing an arrest warrant, prosecutors said. The U.S. Marshals Service arrested Nickles on Wednesday, and he appeared in court three days later.

"I can't begin to imagine the terror this innocent woman must have felt when she was allegedly suddenly awoken in the middle of the night, violently kidnapped from her home and physically assaulted during the ensuing car ride," DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin said in a statement. “While the psychological damage allegedly caused by Mr. Nickles can certainly be debilitating, we are all extremely thankful that the physical injuries she sustained, allegedly at the hands of Mr. Nickles, were not life-threatening."
