Marijuana Dispute In Bensenville Fire District

BENSENVILLE, IL – Marijuana use is the subject of arbitration in Bensenville Fire District No. 2.

In response to a public records request Thursday, the district confirmed arbitration is occurring, but it has not received a decision.

Under the district's policy, possession or use of medical marijuana or being under the influence of marijuana on or off duty are prohibited. Violations may lead to discipline, including termination.

The policy was likely written before Illinois legalized recreational marijuana in 2019.

The city of Elmhurst's policy does not apply to employees when they are off duty.
